Car rental in Nepal
Hatchbacks, sedans and family cars for rent across Nepal, self-drive or with a driver. A self-drive car usually costs NPR 4,000–6,000 a day; every listing shows the exact total for your dates.
What a rental car costs in Nepal
Most self-drive hatchbacks and sedans cost NPR 4,000–6,000 a day, and some businesses charge a little more for trips outside the Kathmandu valley. Rentals of four days or more are usually cheaper per day, and monthly rentals cost far less than paying day by day.
A car with a driver costs about NPR 5,000–6,000 a day inside the valley. On longer trips the driver's food and room are usually covered by the renter, so ask the business or check the listing.
Self-drive or with a driver
Self-drive gives you the most freedom and costs less. You need a valid car licence; foreign visitors also need an International Driving Permit. A driver is worth it on hill roads, for long highway days, or if you do not know Nepal's traffic. On Sajilai you choose either option on every car.
Before you drive away
- Check the bluebook, insurance and pollution certificate are with the car
- Agree the fuel level at pickup; most cars go out and come back at the same level
- Photograph every scratch, and check the spare tyre and jack

Frequently asked questions
Can I rent a car in Nepal without a driver?
Yes. Self-drive cars are available from rental businesses across Nepal. You need a valid car licence, an ID and the deposit; foreign visitors also need an International Driving Permit.
Is it safe to drive a rental car in Nepal?
Highways are narrow and busy, and hill roads have sharp bends and landslide sections in the monsoon. Experienced drivers manage fine with daytime driving and patience. If you are unsure, book the same car with a driver.
How much deposit do car rentals in Nepal take?
Deposits for cars are usually between NPR 10,000 and 50,000 and are refunded at return. Some businesses accept a motorbike, a cheque or original documents instead of money; each listing shows what it takes.
